A liqueur flavoured with caraway seeds, fennel, orris and other herbs. "A. Wolfschmidt" was one of the best-known brands of Kümmel, particularly in the UK and USA, but disappeared from the market in the twenty teens. That was until the Silver Liqueur Company resurrected Wolfschmidt Kümmel in 2024.

The Wolfschmidt name dates back to a distillery established in 1847 by Albert Wolfschmidt in Riga, Latvia. Wolfschmidt supplied Kümmel, schnapps, Riga Black Balsam and 'ochishchenoje stolovoje vino' (rectified table wine, vodka) to Russian tsars Nikolaj I and Alexander III.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 08/05/2025

Appearance:

Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Caraway, aniseed and mint with delicate citrus notes.

Taste:

Full-flavoured, palate enveloping and fiery with pronounced fresh caraway, with aniseed, citrus and fresh peppermint.

Aftertaste:

Long, caraway, aniseed, and peppermint finish with lingering icing sugar and aniseed flavours.

Overall:

Not as pungent or as complex in flavour as some other brands of kümmel, but Wolfschmidt is a very clean and well-made example of this category of liqueur.
