In 1921 Emile Refouvelet established a delicatessen in the French town of Riom-ès-Montagnes and started to experiment with the plants growing in the surrounding countryside. After a year of formulating, in 1929, he started selling this gentian flavoured aperitif in his store.
Avèze is proudly the only liqueur which is flavoured with wild yellow gentian collected from the regional national park of Volcans d’Auvergne, close to where the liqueur was first formulated in 1929. The park encompasses three volcanic mountains (Puy de Dôme, Lemptegy and Vulcania) and these are illustrated on the liqueur’s label.
A yellow label 15% alc./vol. Avèze is also available is very similar but with more sugar and less alcohol.
