Langatun Old Deer Single Malt is triple distilled from unsmoked barley using an English stout yeast and matured in former Chardonnay and oloroso sherry seasoned casks. (A blend of two woods rather than a finish.)
Originally bottled at 40% but now bottled (natural colour) at 46% and at "cask proof" 62% alc./vol.
Sampled on 17/11/2020
Clear, mid-golden amber. Wooden boxed dumpy round decanter style bottle with tacky plastic neck lock and plastic sealed stopper. (Sample bot batch 85/05/20)
Buttery barley, vanilla, pear, and faint sultana.
Sweet dried fruit, ripe pear, crème caramel, raisin, vanilla, and balancing peppery spirituous grip.
Pear and apple with vanilla, raisin, and buttered bread.
We're not fans of the packaging and overuse of plastic around the stopper. The bottle is also not good to pour from. However, the whisky inside has an attractive buttery note (perhaps from the chardonnay casks) with both orchard and raisin fruit along with rich vanilla. Takes water well but is better without - perhaps why the bottling strength has been increased from 40 to 46% alc./vol.
