The inspiration for this handsomely packaged gin’s name comes from the 1736 Gin Act which practically prohibited gin sales by imposing a two gallon minimum unit of sale and swingeing £1 per gallon duty. It also required gin retailers to purchase a £50 annual license (equivalent to a year’s salary).

The 1736 Gin Act was the third in a series of gin acts introduced in an attempt to combat London’s Gin Craze’. Officially named, ‘The Act for Laying a Duty upon the Retailers of Spirituous Liquors’, this act replaced the previous ineffectual 1733 Gin Act.
