Thanks to sea level changes and development, Damrak is now a paved square in the centre of Amsterdam but was originally Amsterdam's first harbour. From the early 1600s until the 19th century, Damrak was a major port for the ships of the Dutch East India.

The company now known as Lucas Bols has made jenever (and liqueurs) since 1575 and originally sourced herbs and spices from this port, which they chose as the name for this rather newer gin brand, launched in 2004.

Damrak Gin is made in a copper pot still close to Damrak Square with 17 botanicals. It is a gin, not a jenever, but is packaged in a glass bottle modelled on Bols' traditional jenever stoneware crock bottles with a china swing-top stopper.

Avaliação e degustação

Experimentado em 30/06/2014

Aparência:

Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Orange sherbet, spicy orange zest, dried fruit and light piney juniper.

Sabor:

Orange zest dominates with underlying piney juniper, angelica root, dry black pepper and cinnamon spice.

Aftertaste:

Orange and spice continues through the finish. Arguably an orange-flavoured gin rather than a classic gin according to the 'juniper dominates' definition. Zesty orange may challenge juniper for dominance but it does so in a classically gin way.
