Renais, short for 'renaissance', was created by actress Emma Watson, of Harry Potter fame, and her drinks-industry brother, who were inspired to create this distinctive gin by their family vineyard, where their father produces award-winning Chablis.

Unusually, this gin starts with grape skins collected after pressing to make wine from the Watson family's vineyards, which, along with lees from the wine, are distilled to produce the base spirit. This is blended with 'Kimmeridgian stone distillate', produced from an infusion of rock from the northernmost part of the Burgundy region. This imparts a subtle minerality to Chablis wines and to this gin.

The botanicals that flavour Renais include juniper berries, grains of paradise, linden flowers and acacia honey.

Resembling a giant perfume bottle, the shapely bottle, with its mustard yellow label, adds an attractive golden glow to the crystal-clear gin inside. Encasing the bottle in figure-hugging biodegradable mushroom packaging completes this masterclass in presentation.

Appearance:

Crystal-clear.

Aroma:

Piny juniper and zesty citrus with nose-tingling black pepper, faint chamomile floral notes and seaside salinity.

Taste:

Dry, complex and juniper-led with zesty citrus and enlivening spices. There's a faint honeyed sweetness carrying subtle floral notes. Perhaps influenced by the power of suggestions, there's also a distinctive minerality.

Aftertaste:

Long lingering citrus and honey with delicately spiced piney juniper.

Overall:

Great tasting; brilliant packaging and presentation; family-owned; an unusual production story; and celebrity-owned/endorsed. What more could you want in a gin?
