Lying 50km west of Sapporo City in southern Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's four principal islands, of Nikka's two malt whisky distilleries, Yoichi produces richer, more peaty and masculine malts using coal fuelled direct fired pot stills.

This example has been matured for 15 years or more in mainly new American oak casks.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 07/05/2012

Appearance:

Clear, mid golden amber with polished golden highlights.

Aroma:

Fruity notes (crisp green apple, ripe red grapes, ripe strawberries and faint lychee) lead with mixed nuts, gingerbread, rolling tobacco and fruitcake.

Taste:

Sweet sherry and pronounced fresh crisp green apple flavours step up to balance plentiful nutty oak and peatyness.

Aftertaste:

Lingering green apple skin, vegetal peatyness and clove spice. Fabulous and fabulously different.
