Review

As a place to eat, drink and socialise since 1869, the Quality Chop House venue, in one form or another, has been serving Farringdon for nearly 150 years. Fresh for 2013 it has undergone a change of ownership and been given a cosmetic clean-up, though its listed status means it would probably still look familiar to its 19th century patrons.

Divided into two sections - one now a wine bar; the other a more formal restaurant - the decor's commendably plain with chequered floor, panelled walls and bare wooden tables. Quirky crockery, eclectic furniture and candlelight are all that's needed to create atmosphere and an eccentric Victorian feel.

The drinks focus is on wine - a comprehensive (though not voluminous) international range with plenty of unusual styles is available by the glass, half-bottle, bottle and magnums in some cases. But it's not just wine: two beers and a handful of cocktails including an Americano, a Martini and a Negroni, made with top-shelf spirits complete the offer.

Even without going into the restaurant proper, a range of small plates can be matched to your drinks. Old school, brought up to date, plus friendly and attentive service help mark out this an absolute gem off Exmouth Market.
