Your average See-'U'-Jimmy tartan hat owning Joe Blow is simply not a man of sophistication, therefore rendering tourist areas such as the Royal Mile a discerning drinker?s no-go. Well, make an exception for Monteiths.
The quaint fairy-lit entrance to Monteiths would suit a Santa's Grotto but walk along the narrow passage way and down the steps and you'll find yourself in a small secluded terrace with wooden tables and chairs. Inside are plenty of cosy nooks and crannies with three distinct rooms: one with the bar itself, another with banquette seating and the furthest distinctly gentleman's club in feel with an open fireplace, bookshelves and leather armchairs.
Monteiths has a good bottled beer and wine list but please go straight to the cocktails where you will find 40 classic and house specials such as the 'bold and daring' Sage Soother with Calvados, apple, vodka and fresh sage served up. The 'Munchies' menu includes haggis wontons and chilli (you know you have to try this), cubed pork belly and rarebit toasts.
The only down side? You may find yourself drinking with Joe Blow.
