Mahiki Coconut liqueur

Difford's Guide

alc./vol: 21%

Proof: 42°

Vintage: Non-vintage

Aged: Unaged

Product of: Product of United Kingdom United Kingdom

Spin-off from the monumentally successful bar of the same name: a coconut liqueur made in the UK and based on Caribbean rum, neutral spirit with flavouring (it is not disclosed as to whether this is natural or not) and sweetened with sugar (we presume as nothing to indicate otherwise).

Since opening in 2005, Mahiki has become one of the best-known night-time venues in the UK with scores of famous faces, and even members of the royal family, enjoying its rum-laced Tiki brand of entertainment. The folk at Mahiki teamed up with Diageo to create a coconut liqueur to compete with the likes of Malibu (which Diageo used to own, so we're guessing they had no problem creating something with a similar taste profile - even the alc./vol. is the same at 21%).

What makes this product stand out is not how or what it's made with but its flamboyant Hawaii shirt-like sleeved bottle. There are presently three different bottle designs and we understand that these sleeves will change from time to time.

Appearance:

Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Aromatic desiccated coconut, macaroon with faint rose petal/jasmine.

Taste:

Sweet - but not cloyingly so, patissiere's coconut - more macaroon with faint hint of rose water.

Aftertaste:

Long desiccated coconut finish with lingering aniseed/mint-like freshness.
