Midori is made with Japanese Yubari and Musk melons - Yubari melons are similar to cantaloupe melons and are a traditional Japanese gift during the summer. The melons are grown in an area where the soil is rich in volcanic ash, which warms the melons during growth.
Suntory originally launched this as Hermes Melon Liqueur in Japan in 1964 but by the time of its US launch in 1978, it had been renamed Midori. That launch was held at New York's famed Studio 54 nightclub with the party hosted by the cast of Saturday Night Fever, including John Travolta.
Midori roughly translates as 'green' in Japanese but despite its Japanese heritage, Midori in the UK is labelled as a 'Product of France'. The bottle was re-designed in 2007 and the sugar content was reduced by 20 per cent following bartender feedback.
The textured bottle is reminiscent of the surface of Musk melons.
Sampled on 01/03/2012
Clear, bright, Chlorophyll green
Perfumed, candied, ripe Cantaloupe melon flesh with crisp green apple skin.
Clean, concentrated in-yer-face (confectioners) melon flavour, some candied and dried banana, but overall well balanced and far from cloying.
Lingering melon flavour, gentle dry finish with faint soapyness (not in an unpleasant way).
