This Belgian IPA was first brewed in 1981 to celebrate the hops festival in Poperinge. Hommel is the Dutch abbreviation of humulus, the botanical name for the hop plant.
Poperings Hommelbier is made from a blend of winter, summer and aromatic pale malts, Brewers' Gold and Challenger hops, both grown in Poperinge. The beer is top-fermented with the breweries own quick fermenting yeast culture and is primed with white sugar with fresh yeast added for bottle-conditioning.
Sampled on 01/06/2012
Cloudy, sandy amber with thick, retentive head and moderate lacing.
Black pepper with herbs, green apple, orange zest and overripe banana.
Creamy, yeasty, herbal malty palate with pronounced black pepper spicy bite.
Lightly bitter, herbal cumin seed finish with lingering black pepper.
