The name of this Italian red-coloured aromatized wine translates as 'ancient red'. It is produced from a mixture of five different base wines, though one, Ancellotta Rosso, accounts for 75% of the blend. To this, 32 herbs and spices are added, including three species of Artemisia and Iris Florentina
Although Rosso Antico is foremost an "aperitivo", it is also a vermouth and conforms to the three EU rules for a vermouth:
1. Must be flavoured with at least one herb from the Artemisia wormwood family.
2. At least 75% of the product must be wine produced according to EU wine legislation.
3. Have a minimum alcohol strength of 14.5% and a maximum of 22% alc./vol.
Rosso Antico should also be handled like a vermouth, stored in a refrigerator and consumed within 3-5 weeks of opening.
Rosso Antico is best appreciated served over ice with a slice of orange.
Sampled on 29/07/2020
Clear, scarlet red.
Woody herbs, roast coffee beans and light exotic spice with honeysuckle, rose, vanilla and zesty citrus.
Lightly sweet and delicately spiced with bitter overtones. Orange zest, rosemary, thyme, caramel and coffee.
Bittersweet fading to more bitter with cleansing zesty orange, herbal complexity and lingering spice.
Rosso Antico is an aromatised wine but has the appearance, aroma and taste of a high-quality rosso vermouth. Indeed, Rosso Antico is great in a Negroni and other cocktails in place of sweet vermouth. Hence, on Difford's Guide, we categorise Rosso Antico as a rosso (sweet) vermouth.
