Ferdinand’s Saar Dry Gin is a made at a grain to bottle distillery, the Avadis Distillery in Germany’s Mosel Region. It is flavoured 30 botanicals, most of them locally sourced, and is infused with Riesling wine made at the famous Zilliken estate nearby.

Ferdinand’s Saar Dry Gin takes its name from the royal Prussian District Forester Ferdinand Geltz, the historic figure who also co-founded the VDP Mosel-Saar-Ruwer growers’ group.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 25/02/2014

Appearance:

(batch L001, vintage 2009/001) Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Piney juniper, pungent lavender, lemon grass, lemon meringue, vanilla and coriander.

Taste:

Slightly sweet with strong cream-of-soda vanilla and lemon curd/lemon meringue with pear drops balanced by dry piney juniper, cracked black pepper, ginger and cinnamon.

Aftertaste:

Lavender, pine, black pepper, dried strawberry and vanilla. Very modern in style with juniper challenged in dominance by a plethora of other non-traditional gin flavours.
