Empress 1908 Gin is the result of a collaboration between Victoria Distillers and the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, British Columbia. Its botanicals include a blend of black tea served at the Empress Hotel and butterfly pea blossom which gives the gin its indigo colour (which changes with pH).

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 01/02/2020

Appearance:

Clear, indigo purple/mauve (reminiscent of methylated spirits).

Aroma:

Piney and citrus with some floral notes – surprisingly classic given the colour.

Taste:

Dry, citrusy and floral with distinct nutty notes and what's best described as a slightly powdery mouthfeel.

Aftertaste:

Citrusy, lightly floral.

Overall:

You can of course add butterfly pea blossoms to any other gin. Depending on your perspective, Empress 1908 Gin is either fun due to its colour and colour changing properties, or gimmicky. As gins go, Empress 1908 would appear to be somewhat overpriced.
