Pronounced 'Looks-Uhs-Over', meaning 'luxury vodka', a reference to the best of the three grades of vodka traditionally produced in Poland. First made in 1928, Luksusowa is one of the oldest Polish vodka brands.
Originally made at Polmos Warsaw, Luksusowa became one of the vodka brands produced by several of the old Polmos compounding plants. In 1999, when the Polmos brands, distilleries and compoundaries were privatised the brand was bought by Polmos Zielona Góra in Western Poland. Then, in May 2003, the Swedish conglomerate Vin & Sprit AB bought both the brand and Polmos Zielona Góra from the Polish government. Although the label has changed over the years, the bottle has always remained tall and square.
The spirit used to make Luksusowa is produced from potatoes grown along the Baltic Sea coast where the soil is loamy and said to produce potatoes superior in quality. The base spirit is distilled from potatoes at several locations and shipped to Zielona Góra by rail where the potato spirit is blended with water drawn from three deep wells under the plant before being bottled on site. Luksusowa is not charcoal filtered and is naturally sweet without added sugar.
Luksusowa was originally made at 45% alc./vol and a red label version at this strength is still produced. A Black Label variant at 50% alc./vol. is also marketed.
