Millars Special Reserve origins lie in a Dublin based company called Adam Millar & Company, established in 1843. The brand was marketed until the 1970s before being re-launched by Cooley Distillers after it purchased some of Millars assets in 1987. Cooley re-launched the whiskey in September 1994.

A blend of grain and malt matured almost entirely in used Bourbon casks.
