40 varieties of apple are used to make Avallen Calvados with 2% of these grown adjacents to the distillery and the remaining sourced from farms within 20km of the distillery in La Manche region of Normandy - an area pesticide-free since 2016.

Avallen production includes the use of only wild yeast for fermentation and Avallen is 100% 'natural' with no added sugar, caramel or boisé.

Paper bottle

As part of their quest to be "the world's most planet-positive spirits brand", in March 2022, Avallen launched a paper bottle in partnership with FrugalPac. Made from 94% recycled paperboard with a food-grade pouch, the FrugalPac bottle has less than 1/5 of the CO2 emissions of a standard glass bottle and weighs only 85g, so also has lower transportation emissions. This results in a Carbon footprint of -3.16kg/CO2e per bottle compared to -2.73kg/CO2e for Avallen's lightweight glass bottle. Avallen's paper bottle is also far more robust than glass so better suited to e-commerce distribution.

Avallen is a Certified B Corp and '1% For the Planet' member, donating to organisations protecting wild bee populations.

Behind the brand

Launched Spring 2019, Avallen Calvados is the creation of two experienced spirits marketers, Stephanie Jordan and Timothy Etherington-Judge.
