First launched seven years ago this limited edition bourbon is released on 2nd September each year to commemorate the birthday of the founder of Old Forester, George Garvin Brown.

Old Forester claims to be “America’s First Bottled Bourbon” and in true American style I notice this statement is trademarked. The squat decanter-style bottle used for Birthday Bourbon is apparently reminiscent of bottles used in 1800’s when Old Forester was first produced.

Birthday Bourbon’s shoulder has a label indicating the distilling and bottling date, in this case 1997 and 2009 respectively. I understand the blend is hand-selected by the Master Distiller, Chris Morris, from one specific day of production so it is said that the distilling date and bottling dates are only given as a year, rather than a more specific date.

So for the geeks amongst us, some specifics: The 2009 vintage release was bottled from a blend of 98 barrels stored in the small warehouse ‘B’ and larger warehouse ‘J’, on the 5th and 8th floors respectively. It was bottled at 97°proof (48.5% alc./vol.) to correspond with the year it was distilled, 1997.

Αξιολόγηση

Η γευσιγνωσία έχει ξαναγίνει στις 1st May 2011

Μύτη:

Hint of soft burnt plastic to the nose of this bourbon which continues through to the palate.

Στόμα:

The plastic note is a prelude to a great bourbon with smoked bacon notes and butter coated slightly burnt barbequed corn on the cob.

Επίγευση:

Starts sweet and finishes dry and bitter.
