Review

Hidden behind curtains on one corner of the imposing lobby of the Marriott Tang Plaza hotel, The Other Room opened in July 2016 with Dario Knox (28 Hongkong St) not only behind the bar but filling the 2-litre barrels with house-finished spirits that are the bar's USP.

The theme is Prohibition, with the signatures of famous rum runners and bootleggers scrawled onto the tops of the tiny round tables that dot the room. These are surrounded by seats unsuited to anyone not extremely vertically challenged, while the built-in banquettes are amongst the most uncomfortable we've ever encountered. Indeed, The Other Room deserves a 'Shameful Design Award' just for the ridiculous art installation in the middle of the room, not to mention the omission of seats at the bar.

That said, the music rocks as do the drinks. Service is also very attentive and the pistol shaped touches which make the menu legible are a darn site subtler than the white light of your phone's torch.

On our last visit, at the end of September 2016, Dario said the design flaws have been recognised and that a re-fit was imminent. In the meantime, go late and enjoy the nightclub vibe and great drinks.
