Review

The Covent Garden outpost of the Spitalfields steak and cocktails specialist, Hawksmoor Seven Dials is situated in the former Combe's brewery, which by 1880 was the second largest brewery in London. Back then, brewer and Lord Mayor Harvey Christian Combe would host, appropriately, a steak dinner attended by the great and the good.

The cavernous basement looks like something straight out of the meatpacking district in New York, but it's the beautiful polished bar that's the first thing you see when you descend to this basement venue. The menu contains a potted history of the cocktail and lists drinks under headings of juleps, punches and cups, tiki drinks, aromatics, 'anti-fogmatics', fixes, fizzes and sours. Each section and each drink has a explanation of their heritage and history.

Hawksmoor has also revived the pre-Prohibition concept of 'bridging drinks' - for the time between lunch and the early evening cocktail, though you'll probably be familiar with the drinks themselves. Everything is served in vintage glassware and the service is slick. Make sure you get the goose fat-fried chips to soak up the alcohol.
