One of the last buildings on the south side before you cross Tower Bridge, The Bridge House is the first London pub to be owned and operated by Adnams, the Suffolk brewer of Broadside, the flavoursome traditional British ale with the strap line "a blast from the past". Not only is Broadside on hand pump, but haddock baked in Broadside batter and served, naturally, with mushy peas features on the tasty, honest and filling rather than outstanding pub grub menu.
The old building has real character, particularly evident when you approach from the toilet level back entrance in Horselydown Lane. The main bar is at bridge level above. Sadly the interior doesn't reflect the building or its iconic neighbour's heritage. The former modern beech furniture may have been replaced by darker counterparts but this House cries out to be a classic boozer but remains modern and uninspiring.
Long noted as a brewer, these days Adnams also boasts its own distillery and you'll find the output of both well represented. The company is also a regarded wine importer and accordingly there's a reasonably priced, democratic list offering 12 bins by the glass. Whether you're here to dine or drink, expect great table service.
