Pronounced ‘Two-Son’, this coffee liqueur is named after the architect of Haiti’s independence, General Toussaint L’Ouverture, also known as Napoléon Noir (The Black Napoleon). Toussaint is made with an infusion of Arabica coffee beans in 3 year old Caribbean rum with 250 grams of sugar per litre.

General Toussaint was born in 1743 on the French Caribbean Island of Saint Domingue, the western part of which became the independent republic of Haiti in 1804, after he successfully led a slave revolt.

Launched in the 1990s, the flask shaped bottle is designed to fit into a refrigerator’s door. The label was redesigned in 2013 when the brand was re-launched and production moved to the UK.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 27/10/2015

Appearance:

Clear, deep amber with bronze tints.

Aroma:

Heavily roasted coffee beans, espresso, tiramisu and dark chocolate with vanilla and nutmeg spice.

Taste:

Strong dry espresso coffee with a burnt note – burnt toffee and faint smokiness. The sugar is a perfect balance so the perception of this liqueur is not sweet.

Aftertaste:

Espresso coffee and spice with lingering burnt toffee.

Overall:

Full-on dry and lightly bitter espresso coffee without the softening sweet chocolate and vanilla notes found in many other coffee liqueurs.
