Column distilled at Distilleria Don Jose in Panama in 1995 and bottled in 2011 after being aged in small oak casks.

Neil Mathieson (Managing Director of specialist drinks importers Eau de Vie) started laying down stocks of rum in the 1990, continually adding “suitable bulk fillings” over the years. The result is the Mezan Barrique XO and Mezan Single Cask rum range, all bottled without filtration, colouring or sweetening. Bottled under contract, these are released once or twice a year depending on sales and Neil’s stated ethos is to continue this, “offering completely natural rums with no further cask influence, through wood or wine finishing.”

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 17/09/2011

Appearance:

Clear, bright golden.

Aroma:

Delicate floral/perfumed aromas on a buttery nose with whiffs of nubuck leather and dried tropical fruit.

Taste:

Wonderfully delicate yet complex palate with Satsuma zest, sultana and dried tropical fruit, just enough oak and sweet spice.

Aftertaste:

Long, satisfying finish with lingering sweet fruit balanced by dry, lightly spiced oak. Rum doesn’t get much better than this.
