Johnny Neill, a 4th generation member of the Greenall Whitley distilling family, was inspired by his wife's South African homeland when creating this gin which launched in 2005. Hence, the use of two African botanicals, fruit of the baobab 'tree of life' and Cape gooseberry.

The brand’s logo, a stylized baobob tree, reflects the use of this African botanical with Cape gooseberry and seven more traditional botanicals: juniper berries, coriander seeds, lemon peel, orange peel, angelica root, cassia bark and orris root.

New matt black packaging unveiled in June 2013 prominently displays the term ‘small batch’, often used by bourbon distillers to convey limited production. However, most gins are small batch so here it is something of a throwaway statement.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 30/12/2011

Appearance:

(batch No. 002) Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Pine fresh juniper leads tropical fruit and zesty lemon with faint parma violet.

Taste:

Dry and juniper led with lemon and orange sherbet spiced with cinnamon and cracked black pepper. Faint notes of mango and parma violet.

Aftertaste:

The tropical fruit emerges again in the long peppered, earthy pine finish. Very clean and fresh throughout.
