Try an Oloroso sherry for a drier and nuttier version. I use black walnut bitters and a nice bourbon.

Bourbon for Scotch; Oloroso for PX; Black walnut for angostura bitters?
I suggest that this be called "Trigger's Velvet Old Fashioned"
(for non-Brits, Trigger's Broom, like Grandfather's Axe and the Ship of Theseus is something that has every single component replaced, while somehow retaining something of the original identity).
