Ghosts and goblins, gargoyles and graves: it's that time of year again to cut up old sheets, paint on the fake blood, stock up on sweets and make a good...
Rob and I created a cocktail called Halloween Night:
2 oz. Demerara or black rum
1/2 oz Parfait Amour
1/4 oz blue curacao
2 drops of Angostura bitters
2 drops of Orange bitters
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a rocks glass with a block or large ice. Garnish is 1/2 slice of orange. Got as black of a colour without using any odd ingredient.
Using the Black Death basics we created one with rum called Midnight Blue: 1 1/2 oz Bue Curacao; 3/4 oz Dark/Blackstrap rum; 1/4 oz Grenadine; 1/2 oz cranberry juice cocktail; 1 1/2 oz lemon juice; 3 oz blood orange juice. Put all ingredients in shaker. Add Ice. Long Shake.
You could use regular oranges but may want to substitute pomegranate juice for the grenadine to adjust the sweetness. I will be adding to my cocktails.
Another way to make black-ish cocktails is the mix of Blue Curacao and Grenadine.
A drink I found using this technique is called the "Black Death". It consits of 4 cl Blue Curacao, 2 cl Tequila, 2 cl Grenadine, 4 cl Lemonjuice and 8 cl Blood Orange Juice.
Quite appropiate for Halloween.
Great tip. Just tried making a Black Death (I only Naval oranges rather than blood oranges) and produced a slightly sweet long drink with a dark aquamarine colour.
