Took P. Schiano's finding to heart since Averna tends to dominate whatever else is in the drink and replaced the Averna with Ramazzotti, which plays nicely with the expressed orange twist. Used Smith & Cross and Appleton Estate 8-year-old Reserve, Bittermens Tiki bitters. We both enjoyed the interplay of dark, rich, caramel-y flavors, with just enough bitterness to keep it balanced. Would probably also be good with China-China amaro.
Try it with a less domineering amaro than Averna and perhaps a less funky blended rum than whatever you used. You might also dial down the Cynar to 1 tsp. We really liked this.
