Oh I don't think the Pilgrims were fleeing religious persecution, in fact what they were fleeing was religious tolerance. They couldn't stand the fact that Catholics weren't being persecuted in England, and they believed that the Church of England was too easygoing. They were Puritans after all and very intolerant themselves. The really want to escape to a place that they could give full reign to their intolerant religion: witness Salem!
