Founded in 1987 by former Associated Press correspondent, Steve Hindy, and his downstairs neighbour and banker, Tom Potter, in 1988. The distinctive Brooklyn Brewery branding was created by Milton Glaser, the graphic designer who is best known for his 'I♥NY' logo.

Steve and Tom commissioned a retired German-American brewer, William Moeller, to create a lager. He used his own skills coupled with that of his late grandfather's, who had left his brewing notebooks and records to him in his will. The result being Brooklyn Lager. The present Brewmaster, Garrett Oliver, joined Brooklyn in 1994.

“Throughout 2011, The Brewery underwent an expansion that will double overall capacity in 2012 and quintuple by 2013. Brooklyn Brewery probably exports more beer than any other American craft brewery” (source
