Named after the Baptist minister Elijah Craig, who is credited with inventing the charring process, little is known about this semi-legendary figure. On September 26, 1798, he and 177 of his neighbours were found guilty of distilling without a license. The reverend was fined $140.
Elijah Craig is made with a mashbill of 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley.
First introduced in 1992, stocks of Elijah Craig 18 Year Old Single Barrel ran dry in 2012 but recovered enough to allow the 18-year-old statement to be returned in October 2015.
This is a true single-barrel bottling, so expect some variation from batch to batch.
Sampled on 01/04/2012
(barrelled 18-Apr-1990, barrel No. 8966)
Spicy nutty nose - almost reminiscent of peanut butter with vanilla oak.
Slightly sweet yet at the same time dry with oaky corn balanced by vanilla and sweet maple. Faint enlivening Worcestershire sauce spice.
Long, oaky maple finish with lingering spice.
