Buckfast is a caffeinated and sweetened fortified tonic wine. Its origins date back to 1897 when the nephew of a French monk visiting Buckfast Abbey in Devon, England brought with him a recipe for a Tonic Wine.

During the early 1930s, the monks sought to develop sales of their tonic wine, which was more medicinal at the time. Due to licensing laws introduced after the war, the monks went into partnership with London-based wine merchants J Chandler & Company Ltd. This led to a reformulation of the tonic wine and the establishment of a new company, J Chandler & Co (Buckfast) Ltd to sell and market the new Buckfast Tonic Wine.
