Released in May 2013, the marketeers behind Glenlivet Alpha chose to make this a “mystery expression” by not disclosing any cask information or tasting notes. “Presented in a black bottle to preserve the mystery, consumers are encouraged to let taste and smell lead their experience.”
The clever, if somewhat annoying marketing campaign around this “mystery” expression culminated with the mystery behind The Glenlivet Alpha being revealed in a video of Master Distiller Alan Winchester, broadcast 6th June on www.theglenlivet.com. It turns out that the “mystery” was that this malt was aged in 2nd fill virgin oak casks – new casks were filled with malt whisky and then used again to age Alpha. In other words, they were casks that had been seasoned with malt whisky rather than the more usual bourbon or even sherry. As the haze displayed with water also suggested, it was revealed that alpha was not chill filtered. Sadly, Alan did not reveal the age of this malt and as we all know, “age matters.”
Only circa 3,500 bottles of The Glenlivet Alpha where released worldwide with a price tag circa £95.

Clear, pale golden. (Clouds with water.)
Apple, cider and poached pear with citrus zest, vanilla custard, linseed oil, desiccated coconut, crispy croissant and delicate spice. Faint smokiness and cinnamon. The apple and vanilla custard is accentuated with water.
Salty, oaky and dry with old leather, cinnamon and nutmeg. A delicate sweetness is released with water. Creamy vanilla custard, ripe pineapple, stewed apple and poached pear tame salty freshly sawn oak and clove spice.
Sweet apple then lingering dry, salty cedar wood.
