Originally there were two styles of American rye whiskey: Pennsylvania Rye and Maryland Rye. Today's ryes tend towards what was Pennsylvania Rye. The Maryland style rye tended to be softer profile with lower rye content. Distilled in Denver, Colorado, this whiskey recreates the Maryland Rye style.
Maryland Rye often had a little prune or other dark fruit juice added (as is commonplace in rum today) to soften and add a fruit notes to the whiskey. The Leopold Brothers have sought to recreate this fruitiness by fermenting the rye with yeast strains known to create fruity esters.
The mashbill used is 65% rye, 15% corn and 20% malted barley and this whiskey is aged around four years.
