The oldest Port Ellen released to date and the 16th in a series of annual limited releases. Bottled from a mix of refill American oak hogsheads and refill European oak butts filled in 1978. Just 2,940 individually numbered bottles were released as part of Diageo’s 2016 Special Releases.
Bottled at cask strength without chill-filtration or added colour.

Clear, golden amber.
Coal dust, pencil shavings, chamois leather, match box striking strip and stewed spinach. Faint smokiness. Water reveals green grape and red apple fruitiness.
Pleasing sweetness counters dry charcoal, coal dust, marine saltiness and vegetal notes with wood ash and clove. Sweeter, even more fruity and alluring with water.
Melon emerges in the black pepper, coal dust and fabulous orchard fruit finish.
The star of Diageo’s 2016 Special Releases, sadly many bottles of this very rare malt will be purchased as an investment rather than something to be sipped and savoured. What a shame. Port Ellen is not revered due to its rareness; it is this malt’s incredible flavour that makes it so desirable - supply and demand drives the price. Treat yourself, slap that card and be sure to invite us round.
