Pampelle is a red grapefruit aperitif liqueur. After harvest, Corsican grapefruit is sent to a winery in south-western France where the grapefruit is infused with botanical distillates such as Japanese yuzu, French cedrat, Haitian bitter orange bigarade, quinine, gentian bitter and grape eau-de-vie.

The brand's imagery with the seal of a Damselfly, a protected native species, is said to "represent the environment in which Pampelle is produced."

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 20/02/2018

Appearance:

Clear, bright scarlet red.

Aroma:

Zesty grapefruit, Tooty Fruity candy, tropical fruit, orange squash and faint vanilla.

Taste:

Bittersweet. Grapefruit flavoured boiled sweets (hard candy) with barky rooty bitterness.

Aftertaste:

Long bitter grapefruit finish with lingering rooty bitterness and very light black pepper bite.

Overall:

Bittersweet – balancing grapefruit bitterness and jammy grapefruit to produce a grapefruit aperitif that is perhaps a tad overly grapefruity. The brand's signature "French Negroni" (with equal parts Pampelle, dry gin and bianco vermouth) makes for a bittersweet jammy grapefruit flavoured Negroni, although this calms and the drink becomes more balanced with dilution.
