Launched in 1978, Schöfferhofer quickly became one of Germany's leading wheat beers and is now the fourth best seller in the German market. Incidentally, ‘Hefe’ means yeast and ‘Weizen’ means wheat.
Hefeweizen is an unfiltered, bottle conditioned wheat beer with a yeast sediment giving it a cloudy appearance. The first three-quarters of a Hefeweizen beer should be poured into a tilted, rinsed glass. The last quarter should be swirled around in the bottle to pick up settled sediment and then poured into the glass.
Sampled on 03/01/2011
Orange-yellow cloudy appearance.
Wheat aromas are joined with notes of lemon, green banana and strawberry.
Mirrors the nose with additional subtle herbal/clove/nutmeg spice notes.
Ripe and overripe banana emerges and grows throughout the finish.
