Inspired by the Chaiwalla, 5 Walla is a chai tea cream liqueur, with the number five in the name referencing the spices which flavour this creamy liqueur cinnamon, clove, cardamom, ginger and vanilla.
5 Walla's distinctive label is inspired by vibrant Indian matchbox art, a form of folk art that emerged in the mid-20th century featuring bold and vivid colours, intricate patterns, and imaginative illustrations.
The term "chaiwalla" originated from the Hindi words "chai" (tea) and "wala" (seller). Indeed, the term "Walla" is a suffix attached to various professions in India. E.g. a "Dhobi Walla" is a laundryman, and a "Dabbawalla" delivers packed lunches. However, it is the enterprising Chaiwalla tea vendors, who emerged in the late 19th century, that have become part of the fabric of bustling markets and train stations in India.
