Brewed from malted barley and hops (without adjuncts), Sapporo Premium is packaged in bottles and a distinctive, thick-fluted silver can. If Airstream made cans, rather than caravans, it would look like this.

Founded in Sapporo, Japan in 1876 by Seibei Nakagawa, a German-trained brewer, Sapporo is the oldest beer brand in Japan. First imported to America in 1964, in 1984 Sapporo U.S.A. Inc. was founded with the beer brand becoming the No. 1 selling Asian beer in the United States soon after.

Sapporo Premium is brewed in breweries around the world with the product sold in the UK brewed under licence in Vietnam.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 12/12/2023

Appearance:

Clear, golden with a retentive thick white creamy head. Copious small rising bubbles.

Aroma:

Light but malty and bready.

Taste:

Light, clean and bready with good carbonation. Mild hop influence.

Aftertaste:

Light but pleasing, clean, bready finish.

Overall:

Light in style but pleasingly clean and bready. The large, curvy, ribbed silver can is perfect for sharing with Asian-style food. Some occasions call for a crusty white loaf-style lager rather than a wholemeal-style ale.
