Made by macerating Moroccan hibiscus flowers in organic grain alcohol with Brazilian cloves, Indonesian cassia, Nigerian ginger and Indonesian nutmeg. The end product is sweetened with cane sugar.

Sorel Liqueur is the creation of Jackie Summers who was inspired by the hibiscus-based liqueur popular in his native Caribbean. After emerging from a fight against spinal cancer he was looking for a more fulfilling career than his previous corporate life and developed a shelf-stable bottled commercial version of his liqueur.

Jackie produces the liqueur under the trading name 'Jack from Brooklyn', the name of his blog.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 17/10/2022

Appearance:

Clear, deep burgundy red.

Aroma:

Pungent hibiscus potpourri and clove with cinnamon.

Taste:

Well-balanced, just enough sugar to balance the bitter hibiscus. Warming but not overpowering ginger heat with delicate nutmeg spice.

Aftertaste:

Spiced red fruit finish with lingering cinnamon.

Overall:

Yes, Sorel is great in cocktails but if ever there was a liqueur made to be served hot as a winter warmer then this is it. Pour a splash into a heatproof glass and microwave on a low setting (360) for 20 seconds or so (depending on your microwave oven and how much you've poured. Less is more. You can always give it another blast if not hot enough.)
