Malibu's identity leans into that tropical escape vibe: piña coladas, sunsets, and relaxed fun. However, the concept was conceived by three Britons, beginning its journey in South Africa and developed in London during 1978.
It all started when Peter Fleck introduced James Espey and spirits innovator Tom Jago to a locally made coconut-flavoured rum. Captivated by its tropical appeal, they envisioned a coconut liqueur that embodied the essence of summer in a bottle. They named their creation Coco Rico, a name chosen for its warm, inviting sound,
Now the world's No. 1 coconut liqueur, Malibu launched in 1980 with its instantly recognisable white bottle, pair of palm trees in front of a setting sun, and the slogan "It comes from paradise and tastes like heaven."
The white rum used as the base for Malibu is distilled from molasses, a byproduct of sugarcane processing. For many years, Malibu was produced at the West Indies Rum Distillery, literally on a beach in Barbados. Early labels prominently named the "Twelve Island Shipping Company", which was responsible for the early distribution of Malibu in the dozen islands of the lower Antilles and later the rest of the world. Today, Malibu is blended and produced mostly in Canada, with other production locations in the US and Spain.
The white rum base rum is blended with natural flavourings and the ingredients used for its various flavour profiles are sourced from regions around the world. The brand maintains long-standing relationships with trusted suppliers to ensure consistent, high-quality production. For example, a proportion of the coconuts used to give Malibu Original its distinct flavour are sourced from a local farming community in the Philippines. A community the Malibu team have worked closely with to help boost sustainable farming techniques and practices for years.
