A former autoparts store has been transformed into something that looks like your great-aunt's drawing room, but from the street the only giveaway about what lies behind the net curtains-covered windows is the small 'Cocktails' neon sign, just south of McCarren Park in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint border.

Ornamental plates and tiny enamels cover the walls, along with tassled light fittings. Underfoot, ceramic tiles laid make for an optical illusion of intricate rugs while overhead a starry, starry night a la Grand Central Station has been painted. But it's not all twee, there's a pool table and a nice little patio on the rooftop.

A handwritten menu lists a handful of cocktails, specialising in house-infused spirits from dill and beet vodka to orange blossom rum and rosemary bourbon. While the drinks are freepoured and put together without ceremony you choose between whether you have it on the rocks or up.

It's sometimes nice to see somewhere that's relaxed and service is Brooklyn friendly.
