Inspired by the success of the UK Gabriel Boudier Wizard Awards, the first French edition of the competition was launched in 2024 in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Maison Gabriel Boudier. This was won by Bérenger Bouttier, who created Sweety Smockey, a Lapsang Souchong tea liqueur.
The competition brought together French bartenders to create an original liqueur, with the rule that all ingredients must be natural and ethically sourced. The final, held 22nd October 2024 at the International City of Gastronomy and Wine in Dijon, challenged seven talented finalists who competed in three rounds under the watchful eyes of a jury of cocktail experts.
Bérenger Bouttier, currently working seasonally in Les Sables d'Olonne, Vendée, France, won the title and a prize of €1,500 for his liqueur, made by blending Lapsang Souchong tea, dried hibiscus, Madagascar pepper, and sugar syrup. This will now be commercially produced and added to the 2025 Gabriel Boudier collection.
