The St Stefanus range of Belgian abbey beers was created thanks to a distribution agreement between SABMiller, Belgium's Van Steenberge brewery and the Saint Stefanus monastery. Beer production commenced in 1784 and transferred to the family owned Van Steenberge brewery in 1978.
St. Stefanus is brewed using three different yeasts, including the Jerumanus yeast strain, cultivated by microbiologist, Janis Jerumanus and entrusted to the Van Steenberge brewery by the monks of Saint Stefanus. Brewed with Pilsner pale and Munich malts and Saaz hops. The beer benefits from a four-week maturation period, after which the original yeast is removed by filtration and the other two strains added. The bottles are cellared to allow secondary fermentation in the bottle to begin prior to being released unpasteurised. Launched in the UK in October 2011.

Slightly cloudy, pale bronze with a huge head which subdues to leave thick creamy foam

Appealing, yeasty, malty nose with resinous clove, pepper spice aromas.

(cellar release 10-2011) Almost creamy mouthfeel, flavoursome malty palate with pronounced slightly bitter resinous spicy hops, zesty citrus and white fruit.

Malty, pine resinous finish with lingering sour zesty pink grapefruit.
