The 1862 proudly adorning Bacardi Elixir refers to the date when Bacardi was established, coincidently also the year Don Facundo Bacardi is said to have created Elixir. As the label says, it is flavoured with "caña de azúcar tostada", literally 'cane sugar toast', which we translate as 'caramel'.
Bacardi first trademarked Elixir in 1927 and it was marketed in Cuba until 1960 when Castro's administration forcefully expropriated Bacardi's assets. Launched in 2011, this contemporary interpretation of Elixir comes in a matt black sprayed, screen printed bottle.

Clear, deep bronze with burnished copper highlights.
Caramel and toffee dominate with honey, toasted nuts, overripe banana and shrivelled prunes.
Bitter sweet, with sweetness being countered by nougat caramel bitterness (think centre of a Crunchy bar). Big, one-dimensional flavour yet strangely thin mouthfeel.
Bitter, scorched sugar.
Toasty, bittersweet caramel with burnt cinnamon spice, crème brûlée, overripe banana and prune.
