Either side of the millennium Cardhu enjoyed phenomenal success in the Spanish, French, Greek and Portuguese markets, so much so, that production of the single malt could not sustain the rapidly rising sales. So, in 2003, Diageo caused uproar in the whisky industry by re-launching Cardhu as what they termed a ‘pure’ malt, what others would term b a vatted or blended malt, from a number of single malt distilleries. Many considered it wrong to give a vatted malt a name previously associated with a single malt due to potentially misleading consumers. Fortunately in 2004 the company conceded and returned Cardhu to its single malt status.
