Nonino quintessentia is my first amaro (apart from the super famous Campari/aperol). Made myself a paper plane yesterday and was not quite sure what to make of it. Thought I’d go a bit more basic today and ended up here. Glad I did! Rye and nonino are serious magic together! Now I want to redo the paper plane with rye instead of bourbon. I’ll be on the lookout for more rye/nonino cocktails. With a basis like this they must all be delicious!
Very delicious, but quite boozy/hot. I liked it better on the rocks, giving a bit of dilution (as written, this cocktail yeilds a higher ABV result than a typical whiskey old-fashioned). You'll need to know your guests before springing this on them, as many may not appreciate the high proof. Again, it is delicious - the Nonino flavor notes display very nicely with the spice of the rye. I think other high proof amari would be interesting to experiement with.
