With a few exceptions (e.g. Luxardo apricot) homemade bitters and liqueurs are two levels above what can be found in the shops. However, not only is the preparation time rather long if you want quality, but they need to be aged for 4-6 years before they are at their best in home-made conditions. This is logistically rather complex to keep in mind in today's world.
