Many thanks Stephen, I've added the quote from your link above. I'm now on a quest to find the earliest Rob Roy recipe based on Scotch. And indeed the latest reference to a Rob Roy based on another spirit.
Thanks, Stephen. I need to find that 1909 recipe and something references I'm struggling with. However, in the meantime, I've amended the history above.
After a little more searching I found that the book is actually from 1909 rather than 1889. It seems that archive.org has the wrong publication date. Still it's an interesting note in the cocktail's history.
Rob Roy Cocktail
2 dashes gum syrup
1/2 jigger apple brandy
1/2 vermouth
Stir; strain into cocktail glass and serve
