Revisiting and exactly to Simon’s spec this time: Lucano and stuck with Bowmore 12. If you like Smokey scotch this is a bona fide late night sipper, as indicated by the title!
Had a fun evening playing with iterations of this including Laphraoig (I’d been stood in s bonfire for two hours, in a good way) and talisker 10 paired with Bitter Truth bitters (found tangled in a fishing net on the west coast of Skye, still in a good way, I think). Most pleasant.
A very good peaty cocktail with a complex mix of flavors. Simon replaced Almeida's Bowmore and Nonino with ingredients I don't have so I used:
1 oz blended scotch (Isle of Skye 12-year-old)
1/2 oz Compass Box Peat Monster (could have used Laphroaig but wanted to try this blend)
3/4 oz blend of tawny and medium-dry Madeira (cause I ran out of tawny)
3/4 oz Nonino Amaro
1/6 oz maraschino
2 dashes Angostura
Served cold, over ice. Excellent, not too sweet, plenty going on in this drink.
Quite an intense experience! Interplay of the Smokey scotch and fruity port, supported by the amaro, was superb. Definitely improved as it warmed a little and allowed the sugar to be tasted, otherwise a little too bitter for my taste. Went with the original spec bowmore 12 and nonino as I’m not a massive Lucano fan, but curious to try Simon’s version now!
